Talbot Group Evolution

Key Achievements

  1. Ken Talbot was one of the team who developed the Jellinbah East Coal Mine in 1988, which was Queensland’s fastest coal mine development in the 1980’s. Ken’s interests in the Jellinbah mine were sold in 1995.
  2. Ken Talbot & Denis Wood led the team who developed Macarthur Coal’s Coppabella coal mine in 1997/98 which was Queensland’s fastest coal mine development in the 1990’s. The example of Macarthur Coal is well known. After acquiring the Coppabella coal resource during the nineties Ken Talbot & his colleague Denis Wood set about the various steps required to bring an operating mine into production. These various steps included the approval of a Mining Lease, Negotiation of Native Title issues, capital raising through a number of Unincorporated Joint Venture Parties who also committed to contracts for the purchase of coal as well as the provision of infrastructure & port allocation. These steps were completed in an impressively short time frame & Coppabella mine was up & running as Queensland’s largest pulverized coal injection (PCI) mine exporting product to steel mills in most areas of the World. Macarthur Coal’s share of the global low volatile PCI market is almost 40%.
  3. The Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Macarthur Coal took place in July 2001. It is noteworthy that the Company has outperformed the S & P / ASX 200 Accumulation index since listing in 2001.
  4. The Moorvale mine was developed in 2003.
  5. December 2006 was an important milestone for the Group as it sold its successful Hotel portfolio and changed its investment strategy to focus mainly on the resource sector. December 2006 also coincided with a number of key personnel joining the Talbot Group strengthening the organisation. After 20 years as an operating CEO / Managing Director including 7 years as a Managing Director of a public company, Ken handed over the mining operations at Macarthur Coal to an impressive team although he has remained on as a director. This change allowed Ken to take more of a hands on role in the day to day running of the Talbot Group.

At the same time Denis Wood joined the Talbot Group as Director of Resources, establishing a very successful partnership with Ken.

They both will prove to be lucrative assets for the Group, as demonstrated both men have a history of facilitating rapid growth in companies and turning fledgling mining businesses into fully operational mine sites within a very short time.

It is intended that Ken & Denis will drive the Groups resource investment strategy.
